TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Following are classes, workshops, and other activities designed to train Scouts and Scouters in the Colonial District so that they can run more effective programs for Scouts in the city of Alexandria and eastern Fairfax County.  If the activity is underlined, you can click that link to go directly to a page that will provide you with more information about it.

Cub Scout Basic Leader Training:
Cub Scout Basic Leader Training is designed for all kinds of Cub adult leaders, including Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Tiger Cub Group Coaches, Pack Committee members, and all of their assistants. It provides information and tips for keeping pack and den programs active, lively, and fun.

The next session of Colonial District Cub Scout Basic Leader Training  will be on Saturday, April 1, 2000 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

SM-Trained.gif (2150 bytes) Scoutmastership Fundamentals
SMF is the fundamental training program provided by the Colonial District for adults who will work with Boy Scouts in any capacity, whether as Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee Chairs, or Troop Committee Members.   "Classroom" sessions provide exposure to a broad range of topics, including troop organization and operation, planning, training boys for leadership, and the conduct of effective meetings.  Youth Protection Training also is offered.   A weekend campout provides the setting for various facets of a successful outdoor program.

SMF will be offered twice during the 1999-2000 Scouting year:

- Fall:  September 9 (evening); September 11 (all day); September 17-18

- Spring:  March 9 (evening); March 11 (all day); March 17-18
WBBds.gif (1275 bytes) Wood Badge
Wood Badge is advanced training offered by the National Capital Area Council for Scout leaders who have completed Scoutmastership Fundamentals.  Wood Badge places participants in a simulated troop environment, with individuals working with colleagues in patrols to develop and apply key leadership skills that are useful both in and out of Scouting.

Wood Badge will be offered three times during the 1999-2000 Scouting year:

- Fall:  September 11-12; September 24-26; October 15-17

- Spring:  May 6-7, May 19-21, June 2-4

- Summer:  June 10-16

VL-Trained.gif (1663 bytes) Venture Leader Training
VLT provides information and participatory experiences that will train adults to work with older youth in Venturing crews and other groups focusing on high-adventure outdoor activities.  VLT is conducted as a cooperative effort among northern Virginia NCAC districts and is offered each spring.

VLT will be offered in the Spring of 2000 on dates to be determined.
