Participant Requirements

Both Scouts and adults interested in participating as members of their district's provisional unit at the Mount Vernon encampment must meet the following requirements:

u Be a registered member in the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America when they apply and at the time of the Mount Vernon encampment.
u If a youth member, be an active member of a Boy Scout troop, Varsity team, Venturing crew, or Explorer post.  If an adult leader, be formally trained for the position the person holds in his/her unit (or with the district or council).
u Meet both of the requirements that Mount Vernon has established for Scouts to earn a special "200 Years" patch:
w Write ten "Boy Scout Rules of Civility for the 21st Century" that follow the form of the 110 "Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation" that George Washington wrote when he was in his early teens.
w Plan and carry out a community event to commemorate the 1999 Bicentennial of George Washington. (Plans for this commemorative event must be spelled out prior to the submission of an individual's application to participate in the Mount Vernon encampment to their district. Depending on the nature of the event, it may not occur until after the application is submitted, and possibly not until after the encampment.)
u Be prepared to pay all encampment fees in full during the first two weeks of June after notification is received from a district that the individual has placed on the roster of encampment participants. (The encampment fee is not expected to exceed $20; up to another $15 or so may be assessed by districts to cover the cost of food and other provisions for their units.)
u Read and sign a pledge affirming the individual's intention to behave in an exemplary manner at all times they are on the Mount Vernon grounds during the encampment. (For Scouts under the age of 18 years, a parent or guardian must countersign this statement.)
